Song of the Day #29: All Is Full of Love

On the tails of Windowlicker, this is another Chris Cunningham directed masterpiece of a music video.

I bought this on DVD when I was 15 and was captivated.

Writing Chinese with Zhuyin

Evidently there's a method of inscribing Chinese characters that has eluded me for years: it's called Zhuyin (colloquially known as Bopomofo - no joke). I'm still learning how this works, but here's the jist of it.

In the words of Wikipedia:

Zhuyin Fuhao, often abbreviated zhuyin, and colloquially Bopomofo is a phonetic system for transcribing Chinese, especially Mandarin, for people learning to read, write or speak Mandarin. This semi-syllabary is currently in wide use in Taiwan. Consisting of 37 letters and 4 tone marks, it is a comprehensive system that can transcribe all the possible sounds in Mandarin.

Although often thought of as an alphabet, zhuyin is not based on consonants and vowels but on syllable onsets and rimes, based on the Chinese rime tables but with diacritics rather than separate rimes for the tones. As in an alphabet, the consonants (onsets) are represented by distinct letters. These constitute 21 of bopomofo's 37. However, excluding the medial glide, each rime also has a distinct letter, which conflates vowels, diphthongs, and final consonants. For example, luan is written ㄌㄨㄢ (l-u-an), where the last letter ㄢ represents the entire final -an. These finals constitute the other 16 letters of bopomofo. (However, final -p, -t, -k, which are not found in Mandarin, are written as subscript letters after a final that represents only the vowel.)

Bopomofo letters are written like Chinese characters, including the general order of strokes and positioning. They are always placed to the right of the Chinese characters, whether the characters are arranged vertically or horizontally. Technically, these are Ruby characters. Very rarely do they appear on top of Chinese characters when written horizontally as furigana would be written above kanji in a Japanese text. Because a syllable block contains usually two or three bopomofo letters (which themselves fit in a square format) stacked on top of each other, the blocks are rectangular.

8/17/2010 Update: I've subsequently learned that this is a Taiwanese transliteration method that pre-dates pinyin. It's being phased out and probably isn't worth learning. Good thing, because it's intimidating.

Chinese Character OCR in Pleco

This is a pretty mind blowing feature. When this comes out in September, I'm finally buying Pleco.

Check out this Youtube clip of how it works:

The song reminds me of Blind Melon. In the best way possible.

Song of the Day #26: You Used to Hold Me

This track came out about six months ago and I vividly remember dropping it for the first time at the February Disco Death with DJ Enso. Shortly afterwards at Disco Death in Kunming (capital of Yunnan Province) I dropped this track again and it was the most memorable moment of the night. I return for another round of Disco Death in the sunny capital city of Kunming tonight at midnight. Really looking forward to it.

Disco Death Dali & Starcraft 2

Yesterday I finished the flyer for Disco Death next weekend in Dali, Yunnan Province. We're doing a show in Kunming (capital of Yunnan) and then taking a weekend trip to Dali to hang out for a few days with old friends we haven't seen in a while. From what I hear, a lot has changed since the last time I was in Dali (February 2009, just before I went to Vietnam) and I'm looking forward to hanging out at Bad Monkey, renting motorcycles and driving around the lake again, and drinking smoothies in the China sub-tropic.

Disco Death Dali

Since Tuesday (the official release date), I've been playing Starcraft II like a fiend. I haven't played games of any kind of months (Xbox 360 has been collecting dust for the better part of a year) but the online play is simultaneously exciting and frusterating. One thing they've done a great job of is matching up players of equal skill. Nearly every game is a struggle and often I lose to really creative and well-executed tactics. This game is like chess on crack - you mind and hands absolutely cannot stop moving for a moment throughout the entire game. I just got promoted to the platinum league as well (the highest of 5 levels of skill on Battle.net). I'm about to get my ass kicked.
